Building Success Through Flexibility: Jennifer Barnes Career Journey

When Jennifer Barnes talks about her career journey, one theme stands out clearly: resilience. From her early start as an accountant at Petco to becoming the CEO and founder of Optima Office, Jennifer’s story is one of turning challenges into opportunities and setbacks into stepping stones.

From Setbacks to Success

Jennifer’s path to Optima Office wasn’t straightforward. After gaining experience in corporate accounting and the mortgage industry, she entered the consulting world. But when a difference of opinion led to her dismissal from a firm, Jennifer didn’t stay down. Clients and team members followed her, and she quickly built one of San Diego’s fastest-growing companies.

That first venture ended in a hostile takeover by partners with different values. But instead of walking away, Jennifer pivoted once again. In 2018, she launched Optima Office. Within its first year, the company generated over $3 million in revenue. Today, it employs more than 100 people and is on track for $14 million in annual revenue.

A Flexible Approach to Finance and HR

Optima Office provides fractional CFO and controller services, bookkeeping, and HR support. Unlike traditional firms, Optima tailors its approach to each client — whether they need a single bookkeeper, a CFO for a few hours a month, or a full team of back-office professionals.

The company works across industries, including real estate, nonprofits, professional services, and manufacturing. With a nationwide client base, Optima has earned its reputation for speed of execution, flexibility, and a people-first culture.

Putting People First

Jennifer believes that business growth comes not just from profits but from building strong relationships with clients and employees. She emphasizes cultural fit, kindness, and creating a workplace where people want to stay. Her approach has attracted both seasoned executives looking for flexible “flextirement” opportunities and younger professionals eager to learn.
